The AVCTL was established on March 12, 2002 with the ratification of the league’s initial constitution and by-laws.  Representatives from the eight member schools of the Ark Valley League and the fourteen member schools of the Chisholm Trail League, along with Salina Central and Salina South, agreed to the merger.  The AVCTL began league competition in the fall of 2004.

League schools compete in four divisions of six-teams with division assignments being determined by enrollment and geographical location.  Division assignments are reviewed and re-established every two years in conjunction with the KSHSAA biennial district football assignments.


Division assignments for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010:

Division I:  
Derby, Goddard, Hutchinson, Maize, Salina Central, and Salina South

Division II:
Arkansas City, Campus, McPherson, Newton, Valley Center, and Winfield

Division III:
Andover, Andover Central, Augusta, Buhler, ElDorado, and Mulvane

Division IV:
Andale, Circle, Clearwater, Kingman, Rose Hill, and Wellington
